NEW BOOK RELEASE

“I loved this collection of stories. The characters are vibrant, passionate, and make mistakes with the best of intentions. The stories are set throughout California, but most of them are in a recognizable Marin County, and Susan Isa Efros depicts the local customs and culture and people with satire but also with affection. The therapist in the story “Recovery,” for one, who is not so good at analyzing what’s going on in her own relationship, or the mystical healer in “The Order of Things,” for another who is in touch with the wisdom of the universe, but locks herself out of her office on her first day in business – these characters are flawed but seen with compassion.
There are also some darker stories in the collection – it’s not all comedy of manners – as in the title story, where a couple of girls in high school in the late nineties who have become lovers end up under the power of the school principal, an older woman who threatens to expose them.
Read this book – you’ll love the settings, the characters, and the voice and vision of the author."

Bio

"

"... a clear-eyed, sensitively written series of imaginative stories. Efros gives us a wonderful sense of place, and brings us closer to her characters with authentic-and often very humorous-dialogue."

Thaisa Frank, AUTHOR OF HEIDEGGER'S GLASSES & ENCHANGMENT

"

"Efros gives us a compelling collection of stories, writing from multiple points of view... a wonderful cast of characters who share their secrets and personal tragedies.  The pace is brisk and the dialogue so vivid that it leaps off of the page. I read it all in one setting and I wanted more!"

Mary Mackey,
AUTHOR OF VILLAGE OF BONES

"

"Girls Gone Astray by Susan Efros is a landmark in short fiction, capturing the pulse of the 21st century with a unique voice reminiscent of American masters like Beattie and Carver. Efros’s post-minimalist prose brings intense, memorable narratives, where high-strung emotions meet subtle humor. Her characters and plots feel both distinct and universal, making her work resonate deeply. This isn’t just LGBT fiction; it’s a slice of American culture—fast-paced, moving, and worth savoring. A keepsake for any library."
